One Small Step

I shared my day with the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research Canada “One Small Step” walk to raise awareness for this rare disease and money for research.

On August 21, 2016 I shared my day with the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research Canada “One Small Step” walk to raise awareness for this rare disease and money for research. The Foundation for Prader-Willi Research organizes these walks all across Canada and around the world. This was the first year I decided to organize a “one Small Step” walk in my local community and set out with a personal fundraising goal of $7000.00 and an overall goal of $20,000.00. To reach the $20,000.00 I reached out to other Prader-Willi families in the lower mainland to add fundraising pages to my walk site. With all of our efforts we ended up raising $11,417.00 not quite our overall goal but not bad!!! My personal goal of $7000.00 was exceeded and we raised $7202.00 with a generous donation from Merit Travel of $500.00 to help!!!! The day of the event was a fun family affair and we had at least 50-75 people attend. We had a silent auction and two princesses came to sign autographs and read to the little ones, which the loved. We could never have achieved this goal without the support of our family and friends. The support I have received from Merit Travel to be able to volunteer my time to this great cause is just another reason I love working for this company.

The cause is important to me because my 5 year old daughter was diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome at 7 weeks old. This syndrome is genetic and affect 1 and 15,000 babies. Prader-Willi Syndrome is a complex syndrome with no cure at present time. This is why fundraising is so important to me because without money, research can’t be done to one day have a cure for my daughter. Please feel free to visit our fundraising page, which is still active, and watch our short video that tells our story more in depth.
